In Jesus' Name
Size: 36 x 60 x 1.5 in
Medium:photo transfers, acrylic, color pencil, and ephemera on cradled canvas
This piece was painted live during an evening church service of worship and prayer at Bridgeway Christian Church, where I attend. Ever since I discovered that palm trees are engraved on the door posts in the temple (Ezekiel 40 & 41), I have used images of them to refer to heaven and the presence of God. In this piece, dancers move in worship among the palm trees and butterflies fly around as symbols of lives transformed by God. During that evening, I was writing down bits and pieces of songs and prayers that I heard while I painted. Later, I transcribed prayers from the Bible, many from the Psalms, over the entire piece, visually giving the same sense of those present who were lifting their prayers and words of worship to God all at one time.
